Alternative Energy Questions:
xbox 360 & SOLAR POWER! help!?
What do i need to do to make my xbox 360 to run on solar power.
a noble cause indeed, but unlikely in practice.
when people say "run" on solar power, the general assumption is to have a pv module (solar panel) tied directly to the load (an xbox in your case).
this would be quite destructive even if you could find a pv module that could support the wattage that your xbox wanted to run at. solar electricity is variable after all, it can rain, there is night to deal with . . .
the direct answer is that you would need to
1. find the load of your xbox in watts (a rate of instantaneous power draw)
2. decide how many hours you wanted to run your xbox
3. multiply watts by hours per day to give you an energy total in watt-hours per day.
4. select a battery bank, and inverter to run your load
5. select a solar array that could support the load and the battery bank
6. select a charge controller that could handle the pv array
7. wire it together appropriately
you can do this exercise for any load, if you wanted it to run X on solar, it would be the same process. this process is great for energy awareness, which is an awesome first test, but for most intents and purposes the exercise will result in the realization that running loads on a variable resource tends to be expensive and complex. the electric company does a bang up job for most folks.
the more pressing question to me is, how much solar would it take to offset your xbox energy consumption in a grid tie system (one that merely offsets household electric usage rather than being responsible for the running of any one thing)?
with steps 1, 2, and 3 you can find that out.
good luck in your quest
