Component that will keep the voltage steady?
Hi, is there a component that will keep the voltage in the circuit steady? So if i use for example solar cells as a power source and i only want lets say 3 volts supplied to my circuit but its really sunny day and the voltage is going from 6-12V is there something like a resistor that keeps the same voltage in the circuit? Obviously i cannot use a normal resistor because it might be suitable for 8V but too strong for 6V or too weak for 12V. Hope u understand what a am asking lol thx
Although a resistor will drop some voltage, it won't regulate the voltage. You need a voltage regulator circuit, which is an active circuit. It continuously senses the voltage by comparing it to a fixed point, and when the voltage increases, the active component (like a transistor) conducts more to shunt enough current to drop the voltage. When the voltage decreases, the transistor conducts less so that less voltage is shunted away. The transistor acts like an automatically variable resistor (which is how the transistor was originally named). These days, voltage regulator (VR) chips are commonly available for a variety of fixed voltages. Your only necessity is to make sure they're rated for the maximum current they'll be working with.
