Alternative Energy Activities Kids

What is a great way to teach year 7s about fossil fuels?
I'll be teaching the students about alternative energy sources the lesson after this one. I just want an interesting way to teach kids about the formation of fossil fuels.
Any fun games or activities?
I'd start with just some regular fossils... kids love them and try to figure out what they were. Once they've had ample time to look at fossils, it's time to talk about how over millions of years of pressure makes coal, for example. Have some samples of coal available, too. (I've done activities like this that might get kids dirty... you might send a note in your weekly newsletter advising parents; also have some wipes available for clean-up.)
