Solar power is not a new concept by any means. It has been used for many years in such things as calculators and even by swimming pools for heating the water. But the use of solar power for automobiles is still a relatively new method of study. Solar power is a natural means of energy that is given off everyday. If it could somehow be utilized in the proper way, it may prove to be an efficient source of power. The race to discover the best fuel alternative is on as science continues to seek a better way.

Solar power is really nothing more than the energy that is given off by the sun. The key is finding the right means of trapping it and making it useful for other purposes. Solar powered grids are often used to attract the sunlight and absorb the sun's energy. It can then be transmitted to the object that needs to be powered.

It may come as a surprise to some consumers to learn that science has been studying solar powered vehicle options for years already. Many solar powered cars are very small and not ideal for today's market. But with increasing amounts of study this possibility might become a reality sooner than we think. Scientists have even been racing their solar powered creations in order to see how they hold up.

Solar powered options have been considered for today's current vehicles. Mazda once created a sunroof that was solar powered. It was designed to keep the inside of the car warm when it was not running and the temperature outside grew cold. These innovations are just a hint of what might be right around the corner.

One of the most obvious concerns regarding a solar powered car is what one would do if the clouds cover the sun. Normally, that would result in the loss of power and the car would come to a stop. And that certainly is not realistic in rush hour morning traffic. To fix this problem, a backup battery is included to automatically take over when the sun is absent.

For using a solar powered car, the energy from the sun would have to be diverted to both the backup battery as well as running the car. Otherwise, there wouldn't be enough energy to cover both facets. This could be seen as a serious disadvantage of a solar powered car.

Another drawback of using solar power as a fuel alternative is that it has to be converted after it comes from the sun. It just cannot be done direct. This might include added costs just to obtain the energy needed to power both the car and backup battery.

The solar cars that are currently in use by science for study are nothing like today's cars. You cannot get in them and they are very low to the ground. It is virtually improbable to see this get on the market. However, if the idea behind this model could be upgraded to fit the cars of today, it may be a worthy possibility.

Alternative Energy Questions:

Do solar powered fountains work?

I have a medium sized pond that is in a shaded area of my garden. I've seen a solar powered fountain but I'm not sure if it will work. I live in the Manchester area so not a lot of sun.
Should I buy one?

My experience has been that the solar-powered ones are not very powerful, and often don't work at all, such as on a cloudy day. There are adaptors you can purchase that make it so you can place the solar panels in a different area than the fountain so that if you are in shade, you can theoretically place the panels in the sun, but even this way does not seem to give the fountain much "oomph." If it were me, I'd save my money and buy a "real" (i.e., AC current powered) fountain with a reliable pump allows me to change the power/output, and will run whenever I want it to, instead of only when the cosmos allign and conditions are just right.

Hope this helps.

Solar Power Your Home Effortlessly

Alternative energy is a decision many home owners are making. These same home owners are either looking to reduce their utility bills or just wanting to make the earth a better place to live. Whatever the reason you have for using solar power, An important point is to remember that solar power will provide you with long term effects. One such effect is a savings to the home owner of up to 80% on their electric bill. How would you like to save 80% of your utility bill?

Solar power for the home owner has become more practical over the years; It will make the value of your home appreciate, support the cause for a better, cleaner environment. Because solar power for homes is becoming more main stream the accessibility to solar power is also increasing. There are many ways to start your home off to becoming a solar powered house but first it's important to understand what solar power is and how solar power will work for your home.

Solar power has two main types: solar photovoltaic and solar thermal. Solar photovoltaic is the converting of sun light into electrical energy and solar thermal uses the sun lights infrared energy to heat liquids that will later release its own stored heat. Solar panels are the most used type of solar power for homes. This method is utilized when you see those black panels mounted on the roof of a solar powered home.

One the biggest benefits of solar power for homes is that your home will now be free of the use of fuel which will drastically cut your monthly utilities bills. The fact is, Solar power is a never ending source and you will not have to worry about depleting the the sun. It is an unlimited source of solar power for your home. Not to mention that solar panels offer no moving parts so there is little to no maintenance required with solar power for homes. There is also the added benefit that most manufactures of solar panels include warranties with their products. Manufactures may have a warranty that is good for up to 25 years.

Solar power for homes can be done simply and effortlessly and provide you and your family many years free from electricity bills and unwanted gas bills. With your unlimited supply of solar power you can choose to start off small and just convert your heating to solar power or you can decide to power your entire home with the unlimited supply of solar power.

Environmental concerns are leading to new trends in the automotive market. Some of these changing trends are currently under study and being put into practice. Solar powered cars are not new ideas but the changing technology and evolution of the idea is. Solar power can be used for energy in many things and cars is just another of them. Though many people feel that solar power is a great solution for the current fossil fuel problems, there are disadvantages to using it. Like with any energy source, it will have both positive and negative points.

Currently, it is not all that simple for science to discover a way to effectively draw and use solar energy. Solar panels are often required, similar to the ones found on a calculator. However, it is not really all that realistic to line the outside of your car with solar panels. It is not efficient and most drivers would laugh at the idea. Switching away from fossil fuels should be easier than that if it is to appeal to drivers in mass amounts. If it is difficult then people will not be likely to make the switch.

Solar cars would also need to be fully equipped with special gauges that measure the amount of energy, how much is being consumed by the car and how much is remaining. Drivers would have to be able to understand these gauges and utilize them. It could be possible to have a solar powered car that does not have many gauges but that would require an entirely different set up. The solar cars that are currently in production have only three wheels which is not something that is going to be acceptable on the current cars of today.

Science is currently testing many types of solar powered cars by racing them. This is a great way to test the limits and functionality of using solar power. Solar powered bicycles are already being produced and used. Perhaps this is a better place to start since cars do not seem ready to become solar powered machines. Though it is a great idea, it is not yet ready for the North American public. Solar cars that are currently in production are very small and can usually only hold one person, which is the driver. This type of car would not be approved in the United States based on the current safety standards required.

It is quite obvious that one negative aspect of solar energy is being able to use it when the sun is not shining or during an overcast day. Many improvements need to be made for this to be a viable alternative to fossil fuels. Having solar cells on the vehicle will not be all that convenient for drivers either. Having a solar powered vehicle would be a great option if it was ready to be released in mass quantities. However, at this stage in the development it just is not a conceivable idea. Solar energy is a fantastic natural resource. With further study, hopefully it can soon be a realistic petroleum alternative.

The use of solar power is something that is currently under much further investigation. It seems that everyone is trying to find a better way to go green and use less fossil fuel. This is obviously a great idea. However, there are many aspects that still need to be considered. Solar powered cars have successfully been produced but is it possible to produce solar powered airplanes? There are currently many solar powered machines in use but there are none widely available to the general public. Solar power sounds like a great idea but like anything it will have its downfalls. Perhaps the use of solar power will grow in time as science learns more about how to utilize this valuable resource.

There is currently a solar powered airplane that has been successfully produced. It is called the Solar Impulse and it is currently a prototype. This airplane is worth $94,000,000 and it weighs 3300 pounds. It is made up primarily of carbon fiber but it is still very small. There is only enough room for one person which is the pilot. Though it is fascinating to have developed a solar powered airplane, there is clearly much more work to be done. The airplane is outfitted with many solar cells that are designed to draw energy from the sun. There are also batteries that store up power so that the airplane can be flown at night. As great as this plane is, currently it can only fly for seven or eight hours at a time.

There are many advantages and disadvantages to using solar powered airplanes. At this time oil is still cheaper to purchase than the costs of creating these planes and improving them. And because the sun is required for solar power this can be a problem on overcast and cloudy days. When improvements have been made in technology then perhaps this will be a more viable solution.

One great thing about solar panels is that they do not give off any pollution at all to the earth. Also, the production of energy by using solar power has no noise pollution or emissions associated with it. The downfall of the solar panels is that they cost a lot to make and transport to various locations. This means that we will not be seeing solar powered airplanes flying in the mass market anytime soon. It simply just has not been well developed enough as a viable idea. It is always hard to make predictions because one never knows how the economy is going to change.

Of course there are many aspects that make solar power something worth investigating and studying further. It could be a way to gain energy in locations that have no other source of energy available at all. Even if the solar powered airplane cannot be used today, going green is about planning for the future of the earth and its inhabitants. It definitely is a possible plan for the future, one that clearly has many advantages. Solar powered airplanes need to be perfected in order to be what the world needs.
